Med Educ. 2006 Jul; 40(7): 704-10.

The need for cultural competency training is well-known, but few institutions have achieved both a standardized 4-year curriculum and formal competency assessment. This paper proposes a framework for the integration of cultural competency training and assessment within the medical curriculum.

  1. Early, formalized classroom instruction – should focus on culture basics and cultural themes
  2. Continued, clinically based instruction – should focus on clinical skills
  3. Formalized assessment – should include knowledge base assessment and skill assessment

The author reiterates the importance of the above through examples from his own medical training.
